The shipping container is a logistics marvel that can affordably move thousands of items from hundreds of different companies all around the globe. Indeed, inflation cooled alongside the bounce back of the supply chain, according to a White House analysis of the U.S. economy. "If so, we expect the soaring freight rates and equipment shortage will continue till the third quarter," it advised clients. This would be on top of the revenue lost by diverted container vessels which are required to pay between $500,000-$600,000 per transit. "However, given the longer transit times vessels are experiencing, the market may face a shortage of empties across Asia until sailings normalize." Evelyn Fornes, Home Depot spokeswoman, said it is working with logistics carriers to find alternate routes to limit any impact from the Red Sea conflict. Martin Goetz, who joined the computer industry in its infancy in the mid-1950s as a programmer working on Univac mainframes and who later received the first U.S. patent for software, died on Oct. 10 at his home in Brighton, Mass. In 1968, nearly a decade after he and several other partners started the company Applied Data Research, Mr. Goetz received his patent, for data-sorting software for mainframes. Ms. Jacobs said her father had patented his own software so that IBM could not copy it and put it on its machines. “By 1968, I had been involved in arguing about the patentability of software for about three years,” Mr. Goetz said in an oral history interview in 2002 for the University of Minnesota. “I knew at some point in time the patent office would recognize it.”

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/Illustration/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 11 (Reuters) - GSK (GSK.L) on Wednesday said it would confidentially settle another lawsuit in California alleging its discontinued heartburn drug Zantac caused cancer, as the British drugmaker sought to end costly litigation. The latest settlements in California related to cases due to go to trial in November, with a further set scheduled to begin in Delaware courts in January, GSK said. The company still faces about 79,000 cases related to Zantac in the United States, with 73,000 of them in Delaware. Late in June, the company agreed to settle a similar lawsuit with California resident James Goetz who alleged he developed bladder cancer after taking Zantac. The settlement could be read that GSK sees a risk that these Zantac cases are strong enough that the company might lose at trial, J.P Morgan added.

The Israeli team emphasised that they were a long way from being able to create an embryo from scratch. "The question is, when does an embryo model become considered an embryo? At the moment we are really, really far off from that point," said team leader Jacob Hanna. "None of these models fully recapitulate natural human development but each adds to ways in which many aspects of human development can now be studied experimentally," she said. The study raises some ethical questions over the possibility of potential future manipulation in human embryo development, Hanna and others noted.

Even when fear seems entirely justified, its expression can be hard to understand, inspired by so many variables. A poll conducted by The New York Times in January 1985, a few weeks after the Goetz shootings, found that half the city’s residents believed that crime was the worst thing about living in New York. A majority expressed support for what Mr. Goetz had done. In the days after the shootings, while Mr. Goetz was at large and the tabloids pumped out day after day of panic-feeding content, the “subway vigilante” emerged as a folk hero to New Yorkers. Some offered to cover his $500,000 bail (he refused); others suggested that he run for mayor.

GSK on Friday said the settlement reflected its desire to avoid distraction related to protracted litigation in this case. It did not admit any liability and said it would vigorously defend itself in any other Zantac cases. The trial was due to start on July 24, the first test of how Zantac cancer claims would fare before a jury. Lucy Coutts, investment director at wealth management firm JM Finn, which holds GSK shares, said the Goetz settlement could create a precedent to settle other cases. "It also removes the distraction of any protracted litigation as the company must focus on its future pipeline which is where value will be created for shareholders," she said.

The research raises critical legal and ethical questions, and many countries, including the US, don’t have laws governing the creation or treatment of synthetic embryos. “Unlike human embryos arising from in vitro fertilization (IVF), where there is an established legal framework, there are currently no clear regulations governing stem cell derived models of human embryos. “I just wish to stress that they are not human embryos,” Zernicka-Goetz said. Right now, the synthetic model human embryos are confined to test tubes. “There is much work to be done to determine the similarities and differences between synthetic embryos and embryos that form from the union of an egg and a sperm.”

Daimler Truck holds 2023 outlook on supply chain disruptions

REUTERS/Fabian BimmerBERLIN, May 9 (Reuters) - Daimler Truck (DTGGe.DE) reported on Tuesday a rise in first-quarter return on sales but maintained its 2023 outlook due to instability in the supply chain for semiconductors which it said was partly due to cyber attacks at its suppliers. It kept its outlook from earlier this year unchanged, forecasting 55-57 billion euros in revenue for the year and 7.5-9% adjusted returns, citing ongoing instability in the supply chain. "It's not stable, but it's getting better," Goetz said, adding the company was "basically sold out" for 2023. It confirmed preliminary results released late April of a 78% jump in operating profit to 1.162 billion euros ($1.28 billion), with unit sales up 15%. Its North America and Europe divisions saw returns of 11.6% and 8.8% respectively, in line with long-term targets.

The trial will be the first test of how Zantac cancer claims will fare before a jury. GSK said in a statement it disagreed with the ruling and would defend the case at trial. Originally marketed by a forerunner of GSK, it was later sold successively to Pfizer (PFE.N), Boehringer Ingelheim and finally Sanofi (SASY.PA). While NDMA is found in low levels in food and water, it is known to cause cancer in larger amounts. REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/IllustrationFeb 16 (Reuters) - GSK Plc (GSK.L) is expected to urge a California judge on Thursday to limit what expert testimony jurors can hear in the first trial over claims that the company's heartburn drug Zantac caused cancer. The trial, scheduled to begin Feb. 27 before Alameda County Superior Court Judge Evelio Grillo, will offer the first test of how Zantac cancer claims may fare in state courts. The plaintiff in the upcoming trial, James Goetz, says he developed bladder cancer from taking Zantac sold by British drugmaker GSK. Lawsuits began piling up soon after the recalls began from people who said they developed cancer after taking Zantac. Cases have been filed linking Zantac to at least 10 types of cancer.
